A storm is brewing over the news that US cloud giant Salesforce had bought the right to rename Heron Tower as Salesforce Tower, as existing occupants voice their unhappiness with the decision.
Salesforce announced the deal at an event last week, where it said it would help boost its presence in the capital and underline its commitment to the UK market. However, the existing tenants of the building are less than impressed.
Several companies reportedly asked whether the news was an April Fool's joke when notified by Richard Gill, managing director of Landmark, the firm that manages the building, according to The Times.
Another, Powa Technologies, said it would not have moved into the building had it known the rebrand was on the cards, especially as it considers itself a rival to Salesforce. It is reportedly taking legal action as a result.
The owner of the tower, Gerald Ronson, is also said to have written to other companies and said that Salesforce will pay any costs associated with rebranding stationery and other items to reflect the change in name to the Salesforce Tower.
V3 contacted Salesforce for comment on the issues that have come to light.
The move by Salesforce follows last month's announcement that the company plans to build a new HQ in San Francisco in a 61-storey skyscraper that's also been dubbed the Salesforce Tower.
The rechristening of the Heron Tower in the City, where Salesforce is already a tenant, was announced today by chief operating officer George Hu at the firm's World Tour event in London, attended by V3 last week.
"It sends a signal about the seriousness of our commitment and speaks to the fact we are always thinking of new ways to communicate our message to the world," he said.
"We want a permanent home for Salesforce in the UK, somewhere where we can put down roots and create a world-class briefing centre for our customers."
Steve Garnett, chairman of Salesforce in Europe, added that the firm expects to add 500 more staff across Europe in the coming 12 months as it continues to see strong growth.
To further raise its profile in the UK, Salesforce plans to open a new data centre in the country later this year.
The firm also used the World Tour event to wheel out some notable UK-based customers, including The Big Issue, the Alzheimer Society and the Financial Conduct Authority, to tout the benefits of using Salesforce.
