BT has announced plans to hire another 1,600 fibre engineers for its Openreach division, and hopes to fill the positions by employing more women and ex-services personnel.
The telecoms giant also said it will start publishing more data on the performance of its Openreach division, giving customers more information on issues such as fixing faults, getting services live and missed appointments.
This comes following pressure from Ofcom on BT to provide greater transparency into the performance of its network management to help customers make more informed decisions about which broadband provider to use.
Hiring 1,600 new engineers will no doubt further help BT improve it services to customers and comes as the number of lines it must serve increases all the time, as it has now passed over 19 million premises according to recent data.
Hiring more engineers will help it ensure it remains on target to get broadband to 90 percent of UK properties by 2015, and prime minister David Cameron backed BT’s focus on hiring females and ex-services staff.
“Supporting business, creating jobs and providing a better future for hardworking people is a crucial part of our long-term economic plan,” Cameron said.
“So I am delighted that BT is launching this major recruitment drive for 1,600 engineers across the UK, providing financial security for families and delivering a world-class infrastructure for Britain.”
The jobs are advertised on the Openreach site now, with salaries starting at around £17,000. Successful candidates will also receive training and support.
New Openreach CEO Joe Garner said the firm was aiming to target females for the roles to show that being an engineer is not a male-only job.
“I’m keen to dispel the myth that being an engineer is an exclusively male vocation,” he said.
"In fact we have many successful women engineers and it is my personal belief that recruiting more will also help our customer service agenda. Being an Openreach engineer is a terrific job and a rewarding career, regardless of your background, or gender.”
BT recently posted profits of £2.8bn driven in part by 7.3 million broadband customers from its BT Retail arm, with 2.1 million of these on superfast fibre services.
