HP is looking to steal customers from rival storage giant EMC by offering tools that make it easier to replace EMC VNX systems with 3Par hardware when upgrading storage infrastructure, according to the firm.
HP said with developments over recent years such as virtualisation, cloud and IT as a service, changing workloads in the data centre have driven the need for a radical overhaul in enterprise-storage architectures.
This has led to an explosion of innovative start-up firms in the storage industry, many of whom have been snapped up by vendors as they try to address the changing requirements of customers.
However, moving to a new storage system can involve costly and resource-intensive planning, change management and data migration processes, HP said. To address this, the firm has introduced an update for its HP 3Par Online Import software that now enables users to migrate data from EMC VNX and EMC Clariion CX4 systems to a range of HP 3Par StoreServ arrays.
HP claimed that latest generation of EMC VNX arrays use an operating system that is not supported on earlier VNX models, so the upgrade path from a first-generation VNX array to the newer models requires a difficult full data migration.
In contrast, the HP 3par Online Import software allows upgrades from EMC arrays to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage without requiring the use of host resources, specialised host software or additional hardware appliances, according to HP 3Par senior product manager Ivan Iannaccone, writing on the firm's blog.
"Planning data migrations takes time and a lot of preparation, which is why it's key that these migrations are simple, and that the applications are completely online during data migration," he said.
"The new HP 3Par Online Import Utility for EMC Storage allows customers and partners to easily orchestrate the migration of data in five simple stages. No agent, tool or utility has to be installed on the server whose data is being migrated."
The software is provided to new StoreServ Storage customers at no charge for 180 days as part of the 3Par operating system suite. It supports migration to any HP 3Par StoreServ 7000 series, 10000 series or all-flash 7450 arrays
HP said the HP 3PAR Online Import software for EMC VNX and EMC Clariion CX4 arrays will be available in June and will be included as part of the 3Par OS Suite version 3.1.3 MU1 and later.
