Intel has announced a new model in its line of Next Unit of Computing (NUC) small form-factor PCs, aimed at thin client, digital signage, point-of-sale and kiosk applications in business.
Shipping now, the NUC DE3815TYKHE (previously known as Thin Canyon), is the first model powered by an Atom processor, Intel said.
With a fanless design, built-in 4GB eMMC flash storage and a space-saving form factor, the new NUC is optimised for thin-client applications. The motherboard also features the ability to directly power an LCD display through an on-board Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) connector.
As well as Ethernet, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, the new NUC also has support for legacy serial ports, inter-integrated circuit (I2C) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals for interfacing with sensors and other devices, with an eye to serving the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market.
With support for Linux and Windows Embedded operating systems, the NUC DE3815TYKHE was designed as the essential building block to power the thin-client market. It also provides an ideal combination of power consumption, performance, affordability and software compatibility to drive light digital signage, point-of-sale, and kiosk solutions.
The Atom E3815 processor is a single-core chip clocked at 1.46GHz, but includes Intel VT technology and 64-bit support. The NUC itself has just a single memory slot for up to 8GB memory and can support a single Serial ATA (Sata) drive.
Intel said that pricing is $129 (£76) for the Intel NUC kit, or $99 (£58) for just for the Intel NUC board.
