UK policing agency, the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU), has appointed its new director, promoting veteran GCHQ manager Dr Jamie Saunders to the role.
Saunders has been at GCHQ since 1998 and has filled a number of policy, operational and management roles in his time at the offices. He was appointed following an ‘open competition' according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).
NCA director general Keith Bristow said: "Jamie has extensive experience in the cyber field at a national level. This is a significant leadership role and I am confident that Jamie will lead the collective law enforcement effort against the rapidly changing threats of cyber and cyber-enabled crime. We are delighted to welcome him to our senior team."
Saunders, whose last role was International Cyber Policy director at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), is ready to tackle what he called the ‘scourge' of online crime.
Saunders said: "I am delighted to be joining the National Crime Agency. Having worked closely with NCCU colleagues over the past two-and-a-half years, I appreciate both the skills and expertise of the team, and the scale of the challenge we are facing. I look forward to leading the unit in the next phase of our fight against the scourge of cybercrime."
He will be heading up a policing unit that includes the Police Central e-Crime Unit. It is expected to react faster to cybercrime and security, and be backed by staff that understand technology. It was highlighted in early 2013 after the National Audit Office spoke of a cyber skills gap that could cost the UK billions each year.
