EE has announced it now has 2.9 million customers on its 4G network, with more than 5,000 medium and large enterprises using the service, as it released its Q1 2014 financials.
However, despite this growth the firm saw turnover drop by 3.6 percent compared with same period last year, to £1.548bn, while revenues fells by 1.7 percent to £1,486bn.
EE said the fall in revenue was due to regulatory cuts that impacted its income and that removing this impact from the data showed it would have increased profits by 0.8 percent.
Despite the fall in numbers EE said it is on track to have six million customers by the end of the year, with its 4G service now covering 72 percent of the UK after more cities came online last week.
EE said there are now 5,100 enterprises on its network, including Fujitsu, NEC and Europcar. Meanwhile it added 889,000 to its overall 4G user base, a figure touted by chief financial officer Neal Milsom.
“We are delivering strong, consistent commercial performance and continue to successfully create value through our award-winning network. We signed up nearly 900,000 4G customers in a single quarter, with over one in four new customers opting for EE’s exclusive double-speed 4GEE Extra plans,” he said.
However, while contract users on the network increased, the firm lost 321,000 pay-as-you-go customers, which it said was in line with industry trends, as more people sign up for contract deals.
The overall user base for 4G services compares well to rivals. Vodafone has 500,000 customers, while O2 touted one million at the start of April. Three has 1.7 million, although it offers 4G services as a free upgrade to existing customers.
