Oracle has officially launched Java 8, claiming it is the most significant Java technology release since it acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010. It also said the Standard Edition and Micro Edition versions are on the path to convergence.
Oracle released to developers the Java Standard Edition 8 (Java SE 8) specifications, and Oracle's own Java Development Kit (JDK) 8 implementation of the standard last week.
At the launch on Tuesday, Oracle announced Oracle Java SE Embedded 8, which leverages the new Java SE 8 features and is optimised for mid to high-end embedded systems. The firm said that Java Micro Edition (Java ME 8) is due for availability later this spring.
Oracle also announced general availability of the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE) 8.0, the latest version of the free open source IDE for Windows, Mac, Solaris and Linux, which enables developers to build web, enterprise, desktop and mobile applications for PHP, C/C++ and the Java and HTML5 platforms. Developers interested in getting started immediately with the Java SE 8 release can download this now, Oracle said.
Java SE 8 enables enhanced developer productivity and application performance increases through features such as simpler parallel programming models and more efficient use of modern, multi-core processors, according to the firm.
In addition, the firm is making advances towards long-term convergence of Java SE 8 and Java ME 8, which will provide a consistent experience for developers across desktop and mobile platforms, according to Nandini Ramani, Oracle vice president of development for the Java Platform.
"Java is the global standard for developing and delivering applications everywhere, from small devices to the Cloud. The convergence of Java SE 8 and Java ME 8 is intended to provide a consistent development environment that improves developer productivity and application performance, along with the ability to ‘right-size' the platform for deployment across an even wider range of use cases," she said.
