Golf fans heading to Gleneagles for the Ryder Cup taking place in September this year will be able to access WiFi across the course after the Ryder Cup organisation signed a deal with WiFi provider Xirrus.
Xirrus will begin installing the necessary kit in May, with the aim to offer WiFi coverage across the entire course. This should enable all visitors to get online, as Sean Larner, vice president of International Sales at Xirrus, explained.
“Gleneagles has a huge amount of acreage that we have to cover to provide fans with a good experience, whether they’re at the first hole or the 18th green,” he told V3.
“People want to upload photos and update their Facebook to tell their friends what they’re doing, or numerous other applications, so we make sure we provide that.”
Larner explained that the firm can also use its own Application Control technology to restrict which apps are given bandwidth.
“We don’t want devices doing iOS app updates for example, which uses up bandwidth, so we can stop this happening,” he added.
Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup director, said providing WiFi was the key to offering a complete fan experience and Xirrus's previous work with the BMW PGA Tour in 2013 made it an ideal provider.
“From a technology perspective, Xirrus was able to meet the very specific requirements of the golf course environment, providing us with complete coverage and the ability to handle huge capacity and bandwidth demands with no dropouts," he said.
"By partnering with Xirrus for the 2014 Ryder Cup we are going to take this performance to the next level and truly revolutionise the way we deliver digital content and engage with fans at the event.”
Xirrus's work in the sporting arena has also brought it WiFi rollout deals with football stadiums, such as Liverpool’s Anfield stadium.
