Yahoo is working to scrap its policy of allowing users to sign in to its web offerings using rival services including Facebook and Google.
Those who are currently using Yahoo services via third-party logins will be forced to sign up for a Yahoo ID. The policy is beginning with the firm's Tourney Pick'em fantasy sports game, but will eventually make its way to all of Yahoo's web services, according to Reuters.
Third-party sign in is a commonly used feature on many websites, particularly those that allow users to leave comments or play games. This type of registration process is intended to increase engagement by reducing the effort it takes to register.
For Yahoo, the policy appears to have been counter productive. Web firms are focusing more and more on data, and allowing users to sign in to its services through rival web companies is not to Yahoo's advantage.
In a statement to Reuters, a Yahoo spokeswoman said: "Yahoo is continually working on improving the user experience." She added that its updated policy "will allow us to offer the best personalised experience to everyone".
Yahoo is looking to turn around its fortunes as it recovers lost ground in the web services space. The company has launched a number of new web and mobile app products including Yahoo News Digest, and has also bought out a significant number of small tech startups to build up an arsenal of mobile technologies and advertising.
