HP has been slammed over plans to shed over 1,100 jobs in the UK as the firm continues to tighten its belt in an ongoing turnaround. The planned cuts come despite profits of $1.4bn for the most recent quarter.
Unite the Union said the company was “a long-term addict to a culture of job cuts” and that its European bosses were powerless to stop decisions made by its leaders in the US.
In total, Unite claims 1,124 jobs will be axed during the start of 2014 at locations including Bracknell, where 618 jobs could be lost, Warrington (483 jobs) and Sheffield (23 jobs).
Unite national officer Ian Tonks said once again UK staff were being mismanaged by HP and he promised as much help from the union as possible for those affected.
“For the last five years HP has been addicted to a culture of job cuts in the UK to such an extent that its highly skilled workforce has little faith in the way the company is being managed and will be going forward,” he said.
“Unite will be doing everything possible to mitigate these job losses, which are a hammer blow to the UK’s IT sector and very distressing for employees in the run-up to Christmas.”
HP confirmed the plans, claiming that it would help those affected during the process. “The proposed UK workforce management plan is part of HP’s global multi-year productivity initiative that was announced to address current market and business pressures in support of HP’s turnaround," the firm said in a statement.
"HP remains committed to supporting the employability of its employees through a number of internal initiatives, including re-skilling, redeployment and support to obtain alternative employment as appropriate."
HP confirmed last week that in total 13,000 employees have left the company during 2013, taking the overall total to 24,600 people who have left since restructuring began.
