As another year draws to a close the mobile market can again look back at a busy 12 months that were full of disruption, innovation, madcap ideas and trendsetting concepts that led to yet more groundbreaking products hitting the market.
With Christmas now just 25 days away, many may be scouring the shelves wondering which phones they should get their loved ones, or considering an upgrade to see in 2014 in style, especially if there are any deals to be had in the January sales.
Whatever your reasons, V3 has put together a definitive list of smartphones from the past year to see who we think has earned the right to a break and a pint of eggnog. And don't forget, if it's a tablet you're after, we've already covered that market too.
Honourable mentions: The Samsung Galaxy Round and LG G Flex
While these phones haven't been confirmed to hit the UK market yet, they could potentially mark the start of a new innovation push.
The first curved-screen phone to be unveiled was the Samsung Galaxy Round, which features a 5.7in HD 1080p curved organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen. It also has three custom software features, designed to take advantage of its curved screen.
The second device was the G Flex from LG (below). This is an Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean-powered device boasting a 720p HD 6in screen that curves around a horizontal axis – rather than the Galaxy Round's vertical axis – giving the phone a distinctive banana shape.
While the curved screens could prove to be a gimmick, we’re always happy to see new innovations in the smartphone market. Curved and bendable displays could prove a common sight in the future, especially if it helps make them stronger and less prone to cracking.
