The 2013 Nexus 5 is the latest step in this strategy. Built by LG and featuring the latest cutting edge KitKat 4.4 version of Android the smartphone has more cool new features than you can shake a stick at. Kind people that we are we've picked out the 10 best of them.
10. Design and build quality
Featuring a 5in display the Nexus 5 is on paper the biggest Google phone ever created. However, despite this Google's done a fantastic job keeping its overall size and weight down.
Thanks to the Nexus 5's ridiculously small bezel the phone measures in at just 138x69x8.6mm. This makes the Nexus 5 just 1mm thicker than the Apple iPhone 5S.
The Nexus 5's also very light, weighing 130g - meaning it's just as travel friendly as Samsung's popular Galaxy S4 smartphone. It may not be quite as light as the iPhone 5S at 112g, but you're unlikely to notice the 18g difference.
9. HDR+ camera mode
Smartphone camera technology is a key battleground at the moment, with every company toting its custom technology as the best.
Aware of this LG's loaded the Nexus 5's 8MP rear camera with a host of cool new features. The best of these is its new HDR+ mode. The HDR+ mode is designed to radically improve the camera's low light performance.
It does this by instructing the phone to capture a burst of shots and then combine the best bits of all of them to create one super image - similar to Nokia's Oversampling technology.
