EE has announced it now has 3,200 business customers on its 4G network as the firm approaches the first anniversary of its high-speed network going live. However, despite this growth the overall number of customers on its network fell.
EE revealed the information in its third quarter earnings report by noting that it now boasts Canon, Expedia, and a number of Premiership and Championship football clubs as 4G customers, as well as 34 universities.
The numbers also showed that the firm now has 1.2 million customers on its 4G network, after it added 493,000 new customers over the third quarter, a rise of 72 percent on the second quarter.
However, despite this increase in 4G users, the firm actually saw its total number of customers drop from 28.1 million in the third quarter of 2012 to 27.4 million in the same period this year. This is also down slightly from the 27.5 million people using EE in June 2013.
Turnover was also down by 2.4 percent to £1.6bn compared to the same period last year. Despite this Neal Milsom, chief financial officer at EE, said the uptake of 4G among businesses proved that interest in high-speed mobile services was growing all the time.
“Consumers and businesses across the UK are recognising that EE has the best network for the smartphone era, with more superfast 4G coverage than all the other networks combined.
"We attracted half million 4G customers in the quarter and large companies including Asda, BT, Canon, Expedia, Kimberly-Clark and Virgin Media selected EE’s network to help grow their businesses.”
Despite the falling customer numbers, EE will be pleased to see 4G uptake grow, particularly as the last quarter saw rivals O2 and Vodafone come online with their 4G services. EE said last week it is planning to offer customers in London up to 300Mbps data speeds over its 4G network.
