WiFi access firm iPass has announced a series of updates to its Open Mobile tool that lets workers access hotspots around the world, to help them reduce expensive roaming costs.

The firm said the update was designed to bring more information to users on their phones or tablets, such as the potential speed a hotspot will offer and the sorts of services this will enable, from email sending and web browsing to video calls (pictured below).

Speed test addition to the iPass mobile app

A new offline Hotspot Finder tool has also been added, so information can be stored on a device showing where the nearest hotspot is. It can use a device’s built-in GPS to direct the user to the hotspot.

New IT-side controls have also been introduced to allow better management of users on the network. This includes the ability to set session limits and receive notifications on use so a staff member does not overuse the network, leading to extra charges over the subscription they are paying.

These policies can now be set based on geographic region or cost, as well as on an individual basis.

European vice president for iPass, Rene Hendrikse, said the update would help businesses ensure their staff could access key information on the go.

“Our updates to the Open Mobile client and Hotspot Finder address issues such as how to find internet access when you aren’t able to access the internet, and how to be sure that you have the bandwidth at a hotspot to carry out the tasks that you need," Hendrikse said.

"As a result, business travellers are enabled with the tools to work more effectively and productively, wherever they are in the world."
