Scores of EE customers have complained that the firm’s 3G and 4G networks are down, with many seeing a “PDP Authentication Failure” message on their devices when trying to get online.
The issues appear to be affecting users across the country, with people in London, Chester and Edinburgh all complaining of intermittent access to the network. Many have taken to Twitter to make their frustration known.
Hi @EE, can you explain the total lack of mobile data I am currently experiencing in Sheffield? Need my emails on the go for my job!— Georgie Beardmore (@georgie_forgie) September 30, 2013
@ee Keep getting PDP authentication error when trying to use data. Help please?— Paul Atkinson (@PaulAnthony2688) September 30, 2013
Users on the firm’s forums have complained of a lack of service. “My iPad is showing signal, but like others on the forum I'm getting a PDP Authentication Failure,” said one customer.
"No sign of 4G, very little coverage and no access to mails or internet. This is massively inconvenient," wrote another. Some of those complaining have said services are returning, but others are still without 3G or 4G.
EE later wrote on its Twitter account that the problem had been fixed and advised customers to turn their phones off and on again.
Apologies from us if you've been having any data problems this morning, all should be fixed now – try restarting your handset. #Mondays.— EE (@EE) September 30, 2013
EE said later that a "network component" caused the issue, which it confirmed lasted for around four hours.
“From around 7am this morning, some customers on the EE network experienced problems when trying to access the internet," it said.
"This was caused by a short term connectivity issue with a network component. Service resumed from 10.30am, and customers were able to initiate and maintain data sessions once again."
The incident comes as EE finally faces competition from rivals O2 and Vodafone in the 4G market as all three networks are now live with services. All firms updated their networks last week with O2 and Vodafone bringing 4G to Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield.
