Tesco has launched its own tablet called the Hudl in an attempt to carve out its own portion of the highly competitive digital content market.
The Android-powered, 7in tablet is priced at £119. The move follows Amazon, which introduced its range of Kindle Fire tablets in 2011 to create a device focused on content consumption and Google, whose own-brand Nexus 7 tablets have proven to be a hit with consumers.
The Hudl undercuts both devices, at £40 cheaper than Amazon's Kindle Fire HD offering – which is rumoured to be sold at cost – and £80 cheaper than Google's. It is, however, £20 more expensive than Amazon's last-generation Kindle Fire, which is currently on sale for £99.
Tesco's device – which it says was "designed from scratch" and manufactured in China – has a 7in HD 1440x900 screen and a quad-core, 1.5GHz processor. Unlike the Kindle Fire HD, the device will allow access to Google's Play store for access to apps, books, music and movies.
Tesco will use the device to place its own services at the forefront of the Android 4.3.3 Jellybean OS. The recently acquired Blinkbox movie and TV streaming service along with Clubcard TV and its banking and shopping apps will be accessible via a dedicated button.
The Hudl is also touted as child friendly, taking advantage of Android's multi-account support to simplify the creation of locked-down accounts.
Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke said the tablet was part of Tesco's aim to make tablets more accessible. "Being online is an increasingly essential part of family life and whilst tablets are on the rise, usage is still quite limited," he said.
"We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK. The digital revolution should be for the many, not for the few."
Hudl will be available from 30 September for purchase from Tesco stores and on its website.
