Samsung has introduced the first solid state drive (SSD) products based on its own 3D V-Nand flash technology. The devices are aimed at enterprise servers and data centres, and claim to offer a greater than 20 percent increase in performance.
The first Samsung V-Nand SSDs are available in 960GB and 480GB versions, according to the firm, with the 960GB version boasting the highest level of performance, offering more than a 20 percent increase in sequential and random write speeds.
Samsung is delivering the drives in a traditional 2.5in form factor with a 6Gbps Serial ATA (Sata) interface, which the firm said offers the best flexibility for server manufacturers. The 960GB drive makes up its capacity by combining 64 of Samsung's 128Gb (gigabit) V-Nand 3D flash chips.
This particular chip technology was revealed last week, with Samsung beating its rivals to market with the first production of 3D Nand chips. These increase storage density by stacking cells vertically as well as horizontally to form a 3D grid, which in Samsung's case can have as many as 24 layers.
Exact availability and pricing for the new V-Nand SSDs has yet to be disclosed, but Samsung said it began production of the new drives earlier this month.
Samsung said it will continue to introduce next-generation V-Nand products with enhanced performance, in order to meet diverse customer needs for flash-based storage.
These customer segments will range from large data centres that will be able to realise higher investment potential from greater performance and energy efficiency, to PC applications that place a high priority on cost effectiveness and high density, the firm said.
