Citizens in Great Britain are becoming ever more addicted to the internet, with new data showing that over half now access the web on the go and almost three quarters of the population are online everyday.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that 36 million adults – 73 percent of the population – access the internet every day, up from 16 million in 2006 in its Internet Access - Households and Individuals 2013 report.
Similarly, getting online with a mobile device has doubled in the last three years, with 53 percent using devices such as the iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S4, to access the internet. This is up from 24 percent in 2010.
This is having a knock-on positive effect for businesses as people are becoming more comfortable with buying online, with 72 percent of internet users buying goods or services online, up from 53 percent in 2008.
Recent financial figures from firms such as Ocado, Marks and Spencer, Domino’s Pizza and Argos all serve to underline this trend. Other key data from the report showed that:
- 55 percent of people use the internet to access news
- 50 percent to access bank accounts
- 43 percent to seek health information
- 21 percent to buy groceries
However, it is not all good news, with the data revealing that 17 percent of households in Great Britain – around four million premises – are still not online at all.
The majority of these people, 59 percent, said they have no access as they ‘do not need it’, while 20 percent said they do not have the computing skills necessary to get online. The cost of equipment was cited by 13 percent as the reason they are not online.
The numbers come as data from Ofcom revealed that the average download speed in the UK has risen to 14.7Mbps, but there is a continued widening of the digital divide between the top speeds those in rural regions and those in urban areas can access.
