Samsung has begun manufacturing flash storage chips for smartphones and tablets that meet the eMMC 5.0 specifications, which it claims are the world's fastest embedded memory.
Available now, Samsung's eMMC PRO 5.0 chips are the first to meet the embedded MultiMedia Card (eMMC) version 5.0 specifications, according to the firm. The eMMC specifications are nearing completion at standards body JEDEC and have yet to be officially published.
The chips themselves are being produced in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, based on Samsung 64Gb 10nm class Nand flash technology.
With an interface speed of 400MBps, double that of the earlier eMMC 4.51 revision, Samsung is claiming its chips will deliver a performance boost for next-generation smartphone and tablet devices.
Samsung said the new components are capable of reading data sequentially at 250MBps and writing sequentially at 90MBps, which compares with typical read and write speeds for external memory cards of 24MBps and 12MBps, respectively.
Samsung vice president of memory marketing KyongMoo Mang said: "With timely mass production of our ultra-fast eMMC PRO line-up offering a more than 10 times performance increase over external memory cards, Samsung will accelerate the spread of high-end mobile devices as the market for devices with larger screens and more multimedia functionality expands even further."
The announcement comes after Samsung posted record profits of 7.8tn won in the second quarter of 2013, up by 51 percent on the same period in 2012. This helped it become the world’s most profitable smartphone maker ahead of Apple. The huge profits, equivalent to £4.5bn, were driven by the success of devices such as its flagship Samsung Galaxy S4.
