London's growing startup scene has been well documented in recent years as the government looks to foster a culture of innovation and technology growth akin to that of Silicon Valley, and there are certainly signs of success already.
But perhaps the East Coast of the US should be given more merit in the world of technology innovation and development, as there is no shortage of interesting, exciting and experimental firms cropping up, or already establishing themselves, in the city that never sleeps, New York.
V3 was recently in the Big Apple and took the opportunity to hit the streets and talk to some of the firms making waves across the pond to find out more about the market and the names to keep an eye on in the coming years.
Launched in 2004 as a tiny New York startup, Vimeo – which is a play on the word video by inserting the word "me" to reference its user-made content – was founded by a group of filmmakers who wanted to share their creative work and personal moments from their lives.
By 2007, Vimeo became the first video-sharing site to support consumer HD playback in 720p and by December 2011, it was well on its way, attracting 65 million unique visitors per month with over eight million registered users.
Based on New York's W18 street, Vimeo – and its array of quirky HD homebrew movies, perhaps renowned for being more arty than those on YouTube – now accounts for 0.11 percent of all internet bandwidth after fellow video sharing sites YouTube and Facebook. And now, rumours are circulating that Apple has interest in embedding the Vimeo app into iOS7 instead of YouTube.
