A major push to integrate touch hardware into PC units will help integrate the platform into the market over the coming years, according to analysts.
Researchers at IHS have predicted that over the next four years, vendors will introduce touchscreen notebooks to the consumer and enterprise sector, and by 2016 one in every four notebooks sold will utilise touchscreen components.
The company said that along with a growing industry demand for touchscreen features and falling prices, the platform will benefit from the backing of Intel, which has introduced an initiative to help push touchscreen hardware in the supplier space.
According to IHS, Intel vice president and general manager of global ecosystem development Zane Ball has committed to the touchscreen space, saying “Touch displays are reinventing the PC market and there is a substantial growth opportunity in this area.”
The research firm projects that over the coming years, touchscreen notebook sales will jump from 4.6 million units in 2012 to some 78 million units by 2016, nearly 25 per cent of the total projected notebook market.
This year alone analysts expect to see a major jump in touchscreen sales, with projections topping out at 24 million units. Much of the jump has been credited to a drop in hardware prices. Analysts believe that over the last year the average price for touchscreen panels has plummeted from $70 last year to just $35 this year.
The growth in touchscreens could help to provide a much-needed sales boost for PC vendors in the coming years. With mobile tablet sales higher than ever, last year saw the first overall drop in PC shipments in more than a decade.
Some sectors, such as the netbook market, look to be wiped out completely in the coming years as tablets continue to take over.
