BT has added another 834,000 broadband customers to its network in the past financial year – with demand for fibre connections particularly strong – as the firm announced profits up 21 per cent in the last quarter.
The UK telecoms giant said it had a strong fourth quarter to round off its financial year, with profit before tax up 21 per cent, although headline revenue was actually down 2 percent, according to BT.
At least some of the strong performance is attributed to demand for broadband, with BT adding 834,000 customers to its network during the past year, with about half of those buying directly from BT Retail.
Customers connecting to BT fibre broadband connections grew by about 270,000 in the last quarter, making a total of over 1.5 million customers now on fibre. However, the figures for those choosing fibre includes customers upgrading from copper as well as new subscribers, the firm said.
BT chief executive Ian Livingston said: "We are driving fibre across the UK, launching high-quality sports channels, investing in the high-growth regions of the world and will use our Wi-Fi capabilities and 4G spectrum to make sure our customers will be the best connected."
BT said it now has around one million small-to-medium enterprise (SME) customers within the total BT Retail broadband base of 6.7 million subscribers.
Overall business revenue was flat in the quarter and down three percent for the year, BT said. The improved trend in the quarter was due to a 10 percent growth in IT services and a slower decline in voice revenue.
