Intel has unveiled its SSD DC S3700 hard drive line, which target the high performance datacentre sector, such as HPC clusters, cloud platforms and big data systems which require high performance and throughput.
Intel is hoping that the solid-state drives will appeal to firms looking to lower the energy consumption of high-speed platter-based drives while maintaining high performance levels.
The DC S3700 drives are capable of read-speeds of 75,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) read and 36,000 IOPS write speed.
"High latencies and slow storage I/O can cripple datacentres' ability to deliver exciting big data or cloud computing applications with fast, low latency data access," said Rob Crooke, Intel vice president and general manager for non-volatile memory systems.
"Intel's next-generation Intel SSD DC S3700 Series breaks through SSD limitations for the datacentre on all fronts, fast, consistent performance, strong data protection and high endurance, so IT professionals can deliver on their most demanding technology initiatives."
While solid-state drives have yet to emerge as an affordable alternative to platter-based storage in most markets, the flash-based drives have emerged as the preferred medium in high-performance markets, as well as in mobile devices and high-end notebook systems.
Platforms such as the Intel ultrabook brand have relied on solid-state drives for part or all of their built-in storage capacity. As the growth of the PC market has slowed, however, analysts are seeing the market for flash storage chips stagnating.
