Samsung has unveiled two solid state drives (SSDs) aimed specifically at enterprise storage systems and servers.
The two drives, called the SM843 and the SM1625, are aimed at organisations that need to carry out fast data writing, such as that required in running social media services in the cloud, hosting SQL database logs, offering media streaming and virtualisation, Samsung said.
The SM843 is aimed primarily at the datacentre market, with Samsung touting its ability to write up to 800TBW (terabytes written). The firm said this represents a 1,600 per cent improvement over its last generation device, which offered 60TBW.
It can also achieve 11,000 IOPS (inputs outputs per second), while latency has been reduced by 80 per cent, according to the firm. The SM843 can also read data sequentially at up to 520MB/s and write it at up to 420MB/s.
Meanwhile, the SM1625 is designed for use in external storage systems for high availability (HA) environments, offering 41,000 IOPS and the ability to write data sequentially at 740MB/s and read it at 848MB/s when using both ports.
It is available in densities of 100GB, 200GB, 400GB and 800GB.
"Samsung's new datacentre and enterprise SSDs deliver extremely high performance with low power consumption in providing the most efficient storage solutions for datacentre applications," said Myungho Kim, Samsung vice-president of memory marketing.
"Samsung will aggressively produce its new line-up of SSDs beginning this month to accelerate SSDs' move into not only the server but also the storage marketplace."
The announcement comes two days after Intel bolstered its line-up of low cost solid-state hard drives with the new 335 series, the company's first to ship with 20 nanometer (nm) NAND flash memory.
