The Chinese labour rights group Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (Sacom) has called out an Apple iPad Mini supplier for worker rights violations.
Sacom said that Chinese manufacturer the RiTeng Computer Accessory Company forces workers to work in hazardous environments and refuses to pay employees overtime costs. The workers' rights group specifically points the blame at Apple for letting the violations continue.
"Apple is not the victim of the scandals at its supplier factories. It is the root problem. Sacom reiterates that only if workers can form genuine unions to defend their rights, working conditions can be improved," Sacom said in a statement.
"Equally important, Apple must raise the unit price and prolong the delivery time, so workers do not need to have excessive overtime to earn a living. Apple should also provide remedies to the workers for its negligence in enforcing labour rights standards."
Sacom said the RiTeng factory, where the iPad Mini is produced, is falling to meet labour standards, with substandard safety practices highlighted as a major cause for concern.
According to Sacom workers are forced to work in poorly ventilated conditions. The group says that the substandard ventilation leads to excessive amounts of ultra-light dust which can get into workers' lungs.
The Chinese workers' rights group blamed excessive dust for the factory explosion at an iPad 2 factory last year.
Sacom also condmended RiTeng for refusing to pay its employees fair overtime wages.
The rights group claimed the manufacturer authorises up to six hours of overtime per day during the peak season. IT also accused RiTeng of avoiding paying as much as 20 hours of ovetime a month.
