Rackspace has unveiled a Cloud Block Storage service, designed to deliver more consistent and reliable performance for customers operating databases or other I/O intensive applications running in its cloud computing infrastructure.
Available now, Cloud Block Storage is based on the OpenStack "Cinder" project which provides persistent block storage to virtual machines running in OpenStack-based cloud computing infrastructure such as Rackspace's Open Cloud.
"We developed Cloud Block Storage to deliver consistent performance in the cloud, with infinite scalability and a very simple pricing model that gives customers the flexibility they require to meet their unique business needs," said Rackspace chief technology officer John Engates.
The service offers a standard option for everyday storage, with an alternative Solid State Drive (SSD) option that delivers higher performance. Both are available under a flat pricing structure with no charge for I/O, according to Rackspace.
Amazon launched a similar cloud-based Elastic Block Store (EBS) service for customers of its Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform back in August.
Rackspace customers can assign up to a terabyte (1TB) of additional storage to Cloud Server instances with Cloud Block Storage, with prices starting at 12p per gigabyte per month for the standard option, and 56p per gigabyte per month for the SSD-based service.
While the standard Cloud Block Storage service is aimed at customers needing large volumes of everyday storage, the SSD version will suit customers running applications that are critical to their business, including those operating self-managed MySQL databases, Rackspace said.
Rackspace said it will not impose any cap on input/output operations per second (IOPS), and no minimum instance size is required.
