Dell's recent parade of corporate acquisitions was put into context Tuesday when the company showcased its plans for the enterprise software group.
The group, which includes recent acquisitions such as Quest Software and security vendor SonicWall, has been charged with providing the software component of Dell's Active Infrastructure platform, which looks to provide customers with a server, networking and storage bundle.
It will also provide elements for Dell's enterprise virtualisation, virtual desktop and network security brands.
For the members of the software group, the challenge also comes with the chance to collaborate with Dell and other recent acquisitions to improve their own platforms.
Patrick Sweeney, vice president of product management and corporate marketing for SonicWall, said that since being bought by Dell, the company has been able to work with other holdings such as Kace to add features and support in its own security appliance.
"There is an amazing level of tie-in and integration," Sweeney told V3.
"It really is exciting and exceptional what you can do when you have all these components."
Additionally, the vendors, who have largely remained autonomous since being acquired, view their association with Dell as a chance to boost their in-house offerings.
Steve Dickson, senior vice president and general manager for Windows Server management with Quest Software, said that his firm has been able to leverage Dell's massive brand name and customer base to further its own reach into the enterprise space.
"We have had great products, but the world did not know, we spread ourselves pretty thin," he told V3.
"Now, with Dell, it gives us this breadth and reach that we did not have before, a seat at a higher level table."
Dell, meanwhile, is hoping that its run of acquisitions will meld into a solid software platform to back its enterprise hardware lines. The company has made Quest and other brands the basis for its next generation enterprise server platforms.
"We spent a lot of time getting the hardware right, but really software is going to be the next way to advance, the innovation is going to be really important," explained Dell Vice president of strategy Tim Mattox.
"As a company we needed to invest in that through inorganic acquisitions or organic growth."
