Internet giant Google is sending out invitations to an Android event on 29 October that will take place just hours before Microsoft launches Windows Phone 8.
"The playground is open", read the Google invitation, "Join us for an Android event." The colourful invitation asks guests to attend Basketball City in New York at around 9:00am local time.
It is not known what Google will announce, so we can speculate that it could be anything from a new Android handset to a new Nexus tablet and to a Google basketball team.
More simply it could just be the opening of a playground, though that is particularly unlikely. Naturally we have asked Google and are waiting to see what, if anything, it reveals.
The event looks set to grab some of the limelight from Microsoft. If the technology world has its eye turned on New York on that day it might be less interested in the news from Redmond, particularly given that Windows Phone has not to date, ignited as much interest as Android.
Earlier this week, Apple stole some of Redmond's thunder, when hours after Microsoft revealed details about its Surface tablets, it started sending out invitations to an event that might just be the launch of the iPad Mini.
Microsoft's rivals are keeping their cards close to their chests about what their events will herald. If nothing else, we can definitely say that the last week of October will be an interesting.
