Facebook is launching a security campaign which will see the company join forces with a number of anti-malware vendors.
The social networking giant has announced a series of deals which will see vendors add security protections to the Facebook site itself and provide users with PC security and anti-virus tools through the Facebook AV download portal.
Facebook said that the deal will bring seven new vendors into its AV Marketplace service, making for a total of 12 security brands for users to choose from.
The new partners will also be contributing utilities to help the Facebook service itself become more secure. The vendors will offer users URL blacklist and link-scanning services to help stop attacks spreading as status updates and wall posts.
"Our new anti-virus partners bring with them both the latest software and comprehensive intelligence," the company said in a post to its Facebook Security profile.
"As with our existing partners, these seven companies will help protect Facebook’s community of over a billion users by improving our URL blacklist system."
Among the vendors who will be partnering with Facebook is Kaspersky Lab. Kaspersky said it would provide URL-scanning services to Facebook and offer users a free six-month trial of its security tools.
"Over the past 10 years, we’ve seen incredible growth in the amount of personal information people will voluntarily share, and cybercriminals have naturally ‘followed the money’ by creating scams and malicious programs specifically targeting social networks," said Kaspersky Lab global research and analysis team director Costin Raiu.
"It takes a blend of online awareness and top-notch security technology to be protected online – one cannot take the place of the other – and by partnering with Facebook, Kaspersky Lab intends to provide both."
Other vendors who will be partnering with Facebook and offering their products on the AV Marketplace include Avast, Avira, AVG, Webroot, Panda and Total Defense.
