Seagate has unveiled three new hard disk drives (HDD), claiming they will help radically decrease the power consumption of datacentres.
The Enterprise Capacity 3.5, Enterprise Performance 10K (pictured above) and Enterprise Value hard disk drives (HDD), were unveiled by the firm on Tuesday, and it claimed they are its most power-efficient products to date.
"Anyone building storage systems today, whether for cloud-specific applications or enterprise data centres, is looking to maximise capacity in the smallest possible physical footprint with the lowest operating costs, while ensuring long-term scalability," said Seagate vice president Scott Horn.
"Our new line of Enterprise hard drives meets this challenge, providing the highest capacity to power ratios, while ensuring consistent performance and high reliability, making them ideal for use in any data centre environment."
The Seagate Enterprise Value HDD provides up to 3TB of storage designed for cloud bulk data storage, allowing companies to move unstructured data off the cloud. Seagate claims the 3.5in drive uses 29 percent less power than competing high-capacity enterprise drives.
The Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD is available in one, two, thre and four terabyte options and is designed for secure storage in data centres.
The final product, the Seagate Enterprise Performance 10K HDD is 2.5in big and can store up to 900GB of data. Seagate claims the Performance 10K uses up to 71 per cent less power than most top-end competing 15K-RPM, 3.5-inch drives.
At the time of publishing Seagate had not responded to V3's request for clarification of how much each HDD will cost, merely stating that it would depend on individual resellers.
Power consumption has been an ongoing problem for datacentres. The high cost running a datacentre has led numerous companies to attempt increasingly diverse ways to reduce their power consumption.
