Windows 8 tablet devices face a tough task to overtake the iPad as the corporate tablet of choice, even if IT managers prefer managing devices running Windows platforms, according to app developers.
During a panel discussion at the BoxWorks 2012 conference enterprise app developers weighed added that the success of Windows 8 in the enterprise market will be based on end user preference and developer support.
The chief executive of enterprise app developer CloudOn, Milind Gadekar, said that the growth of the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend means the success of Windows 8 devices will be on the end user.
"End users will pick whichever devices they want," he said.
Gadekar added it won't matter if IT administrators prefer to run their operations on Windows 8 devices as end users will vote with their wallets.
Furthermore, with the market lead of devices like the iPad and the potential of a new iPad in the near future Microsoft may be facing an up hill battle convincing end users to buy their mobile products.
"I can't think of a bigger enterprise status symbol than the iPad," said panelist senior vice president of corporate strategy for Good Technology John Herrema.
Fellow panelist, Appcelerator chief executive Jeff Haynie, was also quick to point to developer support as barometer for Microsoft success.
Haynie believes that for Microsoft to successful in any market they will need to get developer support first.
"If developers adopt Windows 8 then it will be successful," said Haynie during the panel discussion.
"[But] even if IT wants it, it won't matter if developers don't support it."
Microsoft has already made a heavy push to get developers to put apps on its devices. Earlier this year the company laid out a plan of action for getting developers to port apps to the Windows 8 platform.
