Google has released a developer checklist to help app makers build better tablet apps for Android.
With the release of the Nexus 7 last year, Google opened up the floodgates for tablets running Android. Now, with Google's new checklist for tablet apps the company hopes developers take advantage of the growing tablet ecosystem.
"To help you take advantage of the opportunity provided by the growing tablet market, we've put together this Tablet App Quality Checklist to make it easier for you to ensure your app meets the expectations of tablet users," wrote Android's developer relations tech lead Reto Meier in a blog post to developers.
Google's new checklist focuses on taking advantage of a tablet's larger screen and using assets designed for tablets as a jumping off point for better tablet-centric applications.
The Tablet App Quality Checklist offers common sense advice like adjusting font sizes for larger Android screens and making sure apps don't get hamstrung by hardware unavailable on tablets.
"Handsets and tablets typically offer slightly different hardware support for sensors, camera, telephony, and other features. For example, many tablets are available in a Wi-Fi configuration that does not include telephony support," Google wrote in its checklist.
"To ensure that you can deliver a single APK broadly across your full customer base, make sure that your app does not have built-in requirements for hardware features that aren't commonly available on tablets."
Whether developers use Google's advice to produce high quality tablet apps is yet to be seen. Google introduced new Google Play app guidelines earlier this year. However, developers met those guidelines with an indifferent attitude.
Google's latest tablet advice comes as the tablet market continues to gain support. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey 22 percent of US adults own a tablet. Research firm IDC also reported that over 17 million Android tablets were sold in the first quarter of 2012.
The tablet market is also expected to grow this coming holiday season. Rumours have started spreading that the iPad Mini is expected to ship later this year. Microsoft is also set to unveil its Surface tablet on 26 October.
