V3 has learnt that the government is rushing through a new IT curriculum for school children in discussions taking place behind closed doors.
A draft ICT Programme of Study (PoS) that will cover all pupils aged 5-16 years old (key stages 1-4) is currently being developed by a number of key stakeholders in the education sector.
These stakeholders includes the British Computer Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) who last week signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Department for Education (Dfe) to co-ordinate the development of the new IT PoS.
The new PoS will only be given one month's consideration by the stakeholders the government has selected before it presented to the Department for Education (DfE) in draft form.
The draft PoS will be submitted to the DfE by 23 October and will be published, following revisions by the DfE and government ministers, in early 2013.
This will coincide with the government's nationwide public consultation on the reform of the national curriculum as a whole.
The old PoS was deemed unfit for purpose by the government and 'disapplied' in schools this September, in advance of the revised programme.
The DfE has given the bodies guidance in the content it hopes to see included in the new curriculum, and the timescales it is working towards - with the first meeting taking place on 19 September.
The government demanded the draft would be based on the findings released by the Royal Society report on Computing in Schools, published in January this year, and must get buy-in from key stakeholders.
The RAEng and BCS have already held a meeting with a number of IT associations and education organisations including Naace, NextGen and Vital and the Association for IT in Teacher Education (ITTE) and Computing at School (CAS).
The individuals have not been named but are said to include three secondary school computer science teachers, two academics from computer science departments in universities, and three academics involved in teacher education, two of whom have a primary school background.
How these individuals were selected is not clear.
