An unprecedented sales performance from the iPhone 5 will push Apple to record heights in 2012, say analysts.
Research firm IHS said that if the device sells as expected, the company will close out the year with some 149 million handsets sold, a 60 percent increase over 2011 sales levels.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 yesterday at a special event in San Francisco. With pre-orders for the device set to kick off on 14 September, industry pundits wasted no time in predicting huge sales numbers for the handset.
"Unlike last year's release of the iPhone 4S, this year's iPhone 5 announcement comes as a significant departure from previous models," said IHS mobile analyst Daniel Gleeson.
"The addition of a new, larger screen is a fundamental change in product design. Furthermore, the iPhone 5 is the first member of Apple's smartphone line to feature 4G long term evolution connectivity, accelerating data speeds dramatically compared to previous models."
IHS is not the only analyst firm predicting big things for the latest iteration of Apple's flagship handset. Shortly after the device was introduced, investors took to the stock market and sent the company's share price, already at record levels, soaring even further.
Gleeson said that while the company is expected to post record numbers from iPhone 5 sales on the year, the major impact of the handset would probably not be felt until the final quarter of the year when the holiday shopping season wraps up.
While some analysts have expressed concern that the iPhone 5 will suffer from its lack of screen options in the face of Android handsets, IHS senior mobile media analyst Jack Kent argues that the uniform screen dimensions of the iPhone will make porting to the new models easier for developers.
"The new iPhone will support old apps via the addition of a ribbon so as to preserve the original aspect ratio," Kent said.
"While this will maintain the experience, it does fall short of the flawless hardware-software integration that a vertically integrated model like Apple's should provide. However, this should only be a temporary distraction for users as developers update their apps."
