Dell has updated its Wyse and EqualLogic platforms to provide administrators with better support for virtualised storage and hosted desktop deployments.
The company said that the updated platforms will primarily focus on the storage space, including a line of hybrid storage appliances and improved integration with the VMware View virtualisation platform.
Among the new offerings will be an update for the Wyse VDI platform. The client systems, which allow administrators to centrally host and deliver multiple desktop PC systems through a single server, will be updated with both dual-display and quad-display deployment options.
Dell said that the clients, which will target high-end sectors such as 3D CAD applications, would be designed to run with the VMware View platform.
Jeff McNaught, chief strategy and marketing officer for Dell Wyse, told V3 that the zero client architecture of the platform will appeal to high-security markets such as finance and government systems.
"It dramatically reduces the cost of managing and securing IT; zero clients typically do not have an attack surface and they have little software on them," McNaught explained.
"These devices cannot be harvested for data, because no data ever gets stored on them."
Additionally, the company is planning to update its server lines to better manage and deliver virtualised desktops. The two new EqualLogic servers have been designed to run the VMware vCenter Server platform and will support both 1Gb and 10Gb ethernet connections.
The servers will combine solid-state and platter-based storage for a "hybrid" setup, and at maximum capacity will store up to 84TB of data on a 45 drive storage array.
Dell said that the updates were part of an effort to better equip enterprises to handle mobile users and consumerisation trends. By hosting workstations on a centralised server, the company believes that customers can allow end users the ability to access their desktop PCs through additional devices and from remote locations.
In addition to the hardware and software releases, the company is releasing a series of reference architectures which outline deployments for mobile-focused, high-availability and government systems.
The releases from Dell are part of what is expected to be an extensive line of VMware hardware and software virtualisation products introduced in the coming days as the company prepares to kick off its annual Vmworld user conference.
