Trend Micro is to increase protection against advanced persistent threats (APTs) by expanding its Smart Protection Network security platform.
The company said that the update would bring additional researchers and analysts to the cloud-based security platform. The network, which connects millions of machines to form a real-time system for detecting and blocking malware, will seek to better protect users against zero-day attacks and previously unknown threats.
Tom Kellerman, Trend Micro US vice president of cybersecurity, told V3 that the expansion was part of an attempt by the company to protect against the growing threat posed by APT attacks.
"Rather than focusing on the bullet and the wounds, we are trying to go after the snipers themselves," Kellermann explained.
"We're really beginning to identify how things like zero hour attacks are occurring."
The company said that with the expansion, the Smart Protection Network will generate upwards of 6TB of data per day. With the expanded data set, Trend Micro is looking to employ new analytical techniques such as Big Data platforms.
In doing so, the company believes that it can dramatically speed up the time to deployment for security patches and malware detection tools. In some cases, Kellerman said that the company is able to provide fixes within hours of first detecting a new malware sample.
Such a network will be vital for guarding against attacks from automated kits and exploit platforms, said Kellermann.
"We have seen a tremendous rise in traditional organised crime groups, it is highly problematic," he explained.
"Back in the day you had to be proficient as a coder or be proficient with things like Metasploit to conduct attacks, that is why we wanted to improve our own intelligence gathering."
