6. Kinect computers
Since unveiling the Kinect for Xbox all those years ago, people have been more excited about its application to PCs than games.
This excitement peaked earlier in the year when Microsoft opened the device up to PC developers. However, we're yet to really see the benefits of the device for computing in the mainstream. We're thinking Microsoft may be biding its time, waiting to integrate the Kinect's hands free control features into devices featuring its forthcoming Windows 8 operating system.
With a tiled, Metro, interface screaming for Minority Report style gesture commands, if we're right the first Windows 8 Kinect computer could be something really special, allowing gesture control of desktop devices, which would change office life forever.
5. The growth of big data analytics
The growth of big data analytics technologies has the potential to lead a revolution in the workplace where computers take on the jobs of customer service representatives, or other business support staff.
IBM's artificial intelligence system Watson hit the headlines in 2011 when its capabilities were used to play the US game show Jeopardy and beat former champions to 'win' a $1m jackpot for IBM.
IBM has since secured a deal with insurance company Wellpoint, as well as financial services firm Citigroup, to use Watson to risk-assessment profiles of customers in real-time.
While Watson is the most famous computer system that can search ‘big data', IBM and the likes of SAP and EMC are all racing to develop other technologies that can use big data to predict the future, or to present people with information they will find valuable to making decisions in their daily lives.
The impact this technology could have on the world of business, and by virtue of that into the world of consumers, is likely to be profound, with the implications only now starting to be understood.

The scale of jobs lost to automation will be at least as large as those in the first three industrial revolutions
