Microsoft is blaming its recent $6.2bn write down of advertising firm aQuantive for its first ever quarterly loss.
The company said that it lost $492m in the quarter ending 30 June, as it absorbed the charge from its ill-advised 2007 acquisition.
The charge wiped out what was otherwise a solid quarter for Microsoft. The company reported $18.1bn in revenues and announced that it would defer an additional $540m related to the Windows 8 Upgrade programme.
"The combination of solid revenue growth and rigorous cost discipline drove double-digit operating income growth for the quarter, adjusting for the goodwill impairment and deferred revenue," said Microsoft chief financial officer Peter Klein.
"We are focusing our resources in strategic areas that will deliver shareholder value and long-term growth opportunities."
One of the strongest performances for Microsoft came out of the company's servers and tools unit. The branch saw revenues increase by $568m, up 12 per cent from the previous year's quarter.
"It really seems to be starting to carry a lot more weight in the company and it is likely to do more in the year ahead," said Directions on Microsoft analyst Rob Helm.
"Microsoft seems to have convinced customers to buy products on a long-term basis and with long contracts."
The results comes as Microsoft gears up for its biggest launch in years with the October release of Windows 8. Though the company should see a boost in revenues, Helm told V3 that the boost could be limited by the company's upgrade policy and deferment.
"It is not going to be a huge boost, it is going to be more like a Vista launch than a Windows 7 launch," the analyst explained.
"We won't really see the full impact of Windows 8 until the March 2013 quarter."
