Red Hat has unveiled an updated version of the scale-out storage platform for unstructured data it launched last year, adding support for common file access protocols and a new management tool based on the open-source oVirt technology.
Announced at the Red Hat summit in Boston, Red Hat Storage Server 2.0 is based on the technology it gained from the acquisition of Gluster last year, and is likewise aimed at handling large volumes of data, especially unstructured data.
Available as a Technology Preview, Storage Server 2.0 runs on commodity x86 server hardware using Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and has now been tested and certified on dual-socket systems from over 50 vendors, according to the firm.
"In the coming years, open source storage solutions and volume x86 servers are expected to transform the storage market in the same way that Linux and volume x86 servers transformed the server market," said Ranga Rangachari, vice president of storage at Red Hat.
"With Red Hat Storage we're positioning ourselves to be at the very forefront of this industry transformation."
Red Hat Storage Server 2.0 now supports file systems including Common Internet File System (CIFS), Network File System (NFS), HTTP and OpenStack Swift.
The firm also said it is the first file storage solution to integrate easily with object storage, enabling users to combine large amounts of storage into a single pool.
This enables customers to build out a large-scale storage platform using commodity hardware, saving on costs without compromising on performance, the firm said.
Red Hat Storage Server 2.0 also now has compatibility with Apache Hadoop, enabling it to be used as the storage layer for Hadoop-based big data analytics infrastructure, operating either in combination with the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), or as a replacement for it.
This release also features a Technology Preview of a management console for Red Hat Storage based on the oVirt project, designed to give users visibility and control over their storage clusters via a single console.
