RBS and NatWest have become the latest banks to jump on the mobile payments bandwagon, unveiling a mobile application that allows customers to withdraw money from ATMs via their mobile phones.
The service, called GetCash, allows customers that already have the RBS and NatWest banking app, available on iOS, Android and BlackBerry, to request money on the application, which then generates a six-digit code.
This code can then be typed into the cash machine and the amount of money requested withdrawn, allowing customers access to cash without requiring their debit or credit card.
A maximum of £100 can be withdrawn per transaction and each code generated remains valid for three hours.
"This has never been done anywhere in the UK, and yet is a really simple and secure way to help our customers get cash whenever and wherever they need it," said Ben Green, head of mobile at NatWest and RBS.
"We've heard countless stories from customers who've left their wallet behind, or parents who need a quick way to send money across to their children immediately - GetCash means these problems have been solved in a totally secure and painless way."
The firm also said it had plans to unveil further mobile payment services later this year as banks look to provide customers with innovative services on their mobile devices.
Earlier this year Barclays unveiled its Paytag service that allows customers to place a piece of sticky plastic with near-field communication (NFC) technology on their device to pay for items wirelessly, following on from its Pingit service.
Mobile opeartors are also attempting to muscle in on this market, with O2 unveiling its Wallet application in April that allows customers to send money to one another instantly and buy items directly from their phone.
