Some of the world's leading websites such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo have made their websites continually available over the IPv6 protocol as part of the World IPv6 Day event organised by the Internet Society.
The event is designed to highlight the importance for businesses and governments to prepare for the switch to the new protocol. That switch is needed to ensure networks remain uninterrupted during the transition from IPv4, which has now run out of available address spaces.
Where IPv4 had the potential for 4.3 billion address, IPv6, has the potential for 340 trillion trillion trillion, a number so large it is highly unfeasible it will ever reach exhaustion, even with the growing of connected devices set to come online across the world.
"The support of IPv6 from these thousands of organisations delivers a critical message to the world: IPv6 is not just a 'nice to have'; it is ready for business today and will very soon be a 'must have,'" said Leslie Daigle, chief internet technology officer for the Internet Society.
"We believe that the commitment of these companies to deploy IPv6 will ensure that they remain industry leaders. Any company wishing to be effective in the new internet should do the same."
Notable internet firms such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Cisco have all supported the campaign, with many making their sites fully available over IPv6 protocols as well as IPv4.
"IPv6 is key to preserving the health and openness of the internet for decades to come," said Stephen Stuart, distinguished engineer at Google.
"We're proud to be one of the founding participants in World IPv6 Launch, and we look forward to the day when IPv6 is available to internet users everywhere."
