HP has deployed its first EcoPod container-based datacentre.
The company installed the ultra-compact datacentre platform at its facility in Alpharetta, Georgia. The 40-foot container houses some 2,000 HP ProLiant and Integrity server modules, as well as cooling and management tools.
HP estimates that using a conventional layout, such a system would require roughly 20,000 square feet of office space.
Introduced in 2011, the EcoPod was designed to function as a portable and easily-deployed method for supplementing traditional datacentres. The system combines compact rack-based server and storage systems with built-in networking, cooling and power supplies.
HP believes that the EcoPod platform will appeal to firms as a method for handling rapid or temporary growth in activity, as well as a possible disaster-recovery solution.
"This is a great example of HP's Converged Infrastructure, covering everything from facilities to networking to servers to software in a self-contained powerhouse unmatched in the industry," said HP vice president of IT infrastructure Ken Gray.
"One of the biggest pain points we hear from our customers is how to add compute space quickly and cost effectively, EcoPods address that."
The Georgia system is one of several EcoPod deployments HP has planned. The company is also looking to install a system with 500TB of storage as well as server networking hardware at its offices in Atlanta.
The third and fourth EcoPod deployments are planned for HP's offices in Austin, Texas. The company believes that once installed, the systems will help to reduce power consumption and improve energy efficiency at its facilities.
