Adobe has updated its Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) platform with a number of features designed to improve the reach and compatibility of the publishing tool.
The company said the latest version of the suite would bring the addition of Apple handset support through the rollout of the Content Viewer for iPhone application. The company estimates that the tool will open up DPS to some 220 million users who run iPhone and iPod Touch devices.
The update builds on a DPS platform which already supported publishing for iPad, Android and Kindle Fire tablets.
Also introduced in the update was the expansion of social networking components for DPS. With the latest version of the suite, readers will be able to share digital media content on both Twitter and Facebook as well as via email.
Other features in the update will bring greater compatibility with Adobe's other platforms. DPS will support integration with the Adobe Edge animation tool and new layouts will be available from Adobe InDesign.
First introduced in 2010, DPS is Adobe's foray into the digital magazine and book space. The platform allows publishers to layout and deploy digital versions of publications for tablets and handsets.
The company hopes that the update will help to engage readers more and improve interaction.
"As readers voraciously consume mobile content, they are demanding dynamic, shareable reading experiences across tablet and mobile phones," said Adobe creative and media solutions vice president and general manager Jim Guerard.
"Adobe's digital publishing innovations propel the industry forward by allowing publishers to reach and monetise an unprecedented number of consumers hungry for dynamic, one-of-a-kind mobile reading experiences."
