Lenovo has announced an overhaul of its ThinkPad laptop line based on Intel's Ivy Bridge third-generation Core processors, including a new X1 Carbon ultrabook for business that is styled as the lightest 14in ultrabook available.
The updated line-up includes new models in the X, T, W and L Series of ThinkPad laptops, all based on the third-generation Core processors.
However, the star of the show is likely to be the X1 Carbon ultrabook, which is based on the new Core vPro business platform unveiled today by Intel. The new model effectively supersedes last year's 13.3in X1.
This model "takes ultrabooks to the next level", according to Dilip Bhatia, vice president of Lenovo's ThinkPad business unit, thanks to its use of carbon fibre, weight of less than 1.36kg and slimline design at just 18mm thick.
"We achieved this unprecedented form factor through the use of premium advanced materials like carbon fibre. Just like in the automotive industry, it adds structural strength and durability while minimising weight," Bhatia said.
Despite its dimensions, the X1 Carbon features embedded 3G as well as Wi-Fi, and supports Intel's Rapid Charge technology to bring the system to 80 per cent charge in less than 35 minutes, according to the firm.
Buyers should expect the ThinkPad X1 Carbon in early August.
Other new models include Lenovo's ThinkPad X230 ultraportable, described as a road warrior's dream with its super-bright 12.5in display and a claimed 24-hour battery life when fitted with an optional nine-cell battery and battery slice.
As usual, Lenovo offers a ThinkPad X230t convertible tablet version of its ultraportable, which offers many of the same features but with a 12in touchscreen capability.
The ThinkPad T430, T430s and T530 offer the best combination of mobility and performance with optional Nvidia graphics, according to Lenovo. The T430 is in a 14in format, while the T530 is a 15in and the T430s is a Core vPro model.
Meanwhile, the ThinkPad L430 and L530 are aimed at business users seeking an affordable laptop option, with high definition screens in either a 14in or 15in form factor.
The ThinkPad W530 is a mobile workstation certified for applications such as CAD/CAM and 3D modelling, with built-in Nvidia Quadro graphics and support for up to four additional displays when docked.
Lenovo has also updated its docking stations with the new USB 3.0 Dock featuring five USB 3.0 ports as well as HD video output and gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
UK pricing and availability for the new ThinkPad models has yet to be disclosed.
