SAP's co-chief executive Bill McDermott has revealed that the company now has 196,000 customers on its books and is aiming for over 200,000 by the end of the year.
Speaking at the firm's annual Sapphire event in Orlando, Florida, McDermott said the firm was hoping to push this growth by meeting the demand for cloud computing applications to help businesses improve productivity.
He said the growth of mobile working tools was a key part of the strategy the firm had identified as a potential to gain new clients and help it compete with key rivals such as Oracle and IBM.
"We knew companies would want to run their businesses on mobiles," he said.
"Take T-Mobile, they have 50 per cent of their workforce on the move, some 10,000 people able to do their job on the go, from [customer relationship management] to expenses, and there are many more companies with over half their staff on the frontline."
He said this growth was helping the company maintain its target to double the size of the firm by 2015.
McDermott also said the firm would be expanding its workforce dedicated to its HANA platform for big data analytics as SAP performs well in the three core areas of its strategy: analytics, cloud computing and mobile working.
McDermott also said the iPad had made a huge impact on the way businesses were changing their working practices and claimed SAP was one of the first adopters of the iPad within a large enterprise.
He added that the order was a surprise to Steve Jobs, who rang him to ask why SAP was using the device, which Dermott explained was because it was easy for staff to use iPads to interact with customers and was "beautiful to use".
