Intel has provided an update on its ultrabook line and the looming release of vPro-branded ultrabooks for business users.
PC client group vice president Kirk Skaugen said that the company was working with vendors on the development and production of notebooks which fit into the ultrabook category while also supporting the specifications of vPro.
Skaugen said that the platform will bring additional security and management options to an ultrabook class which has until now been limited to consumer-oriented systems.
"This is going to be incredibly exciting for the business market," Skaugen said. "As we look around, the consumerisation of IT is a key thing we hear from CIOs."
Intel is also looking to drop both the cost and profile of ultrabook systems. While early ultrabook models often fell into the $1000 range, Skaugen believes that upcoming options will be priced as low as $699.
The form-factor of ultrabooks will also be shrinking, slimming down to case sizes as thin as 18mm on some systems.
Skaugen credited both advances on the use of new plastic-based materials.
While early ultrabooks used lightweight aluminium casings which cost more and produced a thicker system profile, newer model ultrabooks will utilise plastics which are cheaper and allow for even thinner designs.
"What we are seeing now is more innovation in the plastics." he said. "What that is driving is more volume and more innovation."
Intel hopes to further expand on its ultrabook lines in the coming months as vendors introduce vPro systems as well as ultrabooks running Windows 8 and eventually Intel's Haswell chips.
The company said that its next processor architecture was on course for release in 2013 and will offer dramatic improvements in both performance and efficiency.
