IBM has expanded its big data analytics offerings with updates to its DB2 and InfoSphere Warehouse software, and through new integration with Apache Hadoop.
IBM said both updates to the software, which will be available from the 30 April, are intended to lower businesses' storage costs, and make it easier for them to manage data, so they can spend more time on analytics processes.
"Today's growing data volumes make it tougher for clients to access the right data when they need it to stay competitive," said Arvind Krishna, general manager at IBM's information management unit.
"IBM has advanced database and data warehouse technology to the point where data management can be automated and insights shared more broadly than ever before, freeing up decision makers and IT staff to focus on business growth."
Version 10 of the DB2 relational database management software can instantly compress data that needs to be stored through adaptive compression and multi-temperature data management technologies, claimed IBM.
Such techniques can be used to prevent storage sprawl, the firm added.
DB2 10 also can automatically assess how frequently data is needed and transfer it to different types of storage accordingly, whether it be solid-state drives or tape drives.
IBM said customers can also now more easily transfer data from Oracle databases to the DB2 software.
Meanwhile, version 10 of the Infosphere warehouse software now performs queries up to 10 times faster to help customers speed up their decision making and to free up their storage space, claimed IBM.
Integration with Hadoop will allow customers to analyse unstructured data faster, such as social networking information or texts from mobile devices.
Ovum analyst Mike Davis said the updates and the added alignment between DB2 and Infosphere show IBM is making a "fightback" against SAP.
"SAP has been really trying to run the idea of big data with its Hana product," Davies told V3.
Others big data analytics vendors that have been expanding their offerings in recent months include EMC and Oracle.
