IBM is expanding its efforts to install its Blue Gene supercomputing platform for research and commercial use.
The company said that it would be installing a deployment of its cluster platform at Rice University in Texas. Usage time on the system will also be shared with Brazil's University of Sao Paulo. The cluster will be the first Blue Gene system installed in the state of Texas.
In addition to the shared research time, the university also plans to offer the Blue Gene system for use with local industries. Located near Houston, the university plans to partner with the city's large collection of oil and power firms for applications such as engineering and geographic modelling tasks as well as biomedical applications.
"This new computing capability will speed the search for new sources of energy, new ways of maximizing current energy sources, new cancer drugs and new routes to personalised medicine," said IBM Texas senior executive Tony Bell.
"We are excited that Rice has now joined an exclusive club of the world's top research organisations who use powerful and energy-efficient Blue Gene supercomputers to solve some of the world's most pressing problems."
The deal is the second major university partnership IBM has launched this week. The announcement comes just days after the company secured a similar deal with Rutgers University in New Jersey.
While the Rice system will primarily be used for research and engineering applications, the Rutgers Blue Gene cluster will be the backbone of an effort to spur the development of big data management systems and will also be offered as a commercial service for businesses in the area.
