Research in Motion (RIM) has lost top spot in its home market of Canada to Apple's iOS platform, according to analyst reports.
The Toronto Star cited research from analyst firm IDC in reporting that Apple's 2.85 million devices sold in 2011, outpacing RIM's 2.08 million.
The report is the first in which Apple has managed to outsell the Ontario-based RIM on its home soil.
RIM has seen its place in the smartphone market plummet in recent years. Once the top vendor in the space, the BlackBerry vendor has born the brunt of gains made by Apple's iOS and the Google Android platform.
Most recently, the company launched a largely unsuccessful bid to enter the tablet space, with its BlackBerry Playbook.
The plunge in the smartphone sales has also taken a toll on RIM, forcing executive departures.
Charles King, founder and principal analyst of Pund-IT Research, told V3 that while losing its home market may be embarrassing for RIM, the company has far greater issues to worry about than just public relations.
"RIM has definitely been having its problems over the last year or two, they have never been able to grow their base beyond the dedicated business users," he explained.
"iPhone and Android seem to have taken the concept beyond a tool for business use into a mainstream computing device."
King believes that RIM should focus squarely on its secure enterprise services, concentrating on filling a market niche that neither iOS nor Android have been able to address.
"Whenever a company hits a bad patch like RIM is in, you want to polish your existing skill set as highly as possible while you investigate ways to reach into new markets," the analyst explained.
"The secured enterprise pitch is still a strong sales point for RIM."
