Google has unveiled a media service which will combine its mobile applications and digital media platforms under a single banner.
The company said that the Google Play service will replace the Android Market, eBookstore and Music brands. The service will cover both the desktop and mobile markets and will be entirely web-based.
Additionally, the Play service will offer cloud-based storage. Users will be able to backup a maximum of 20,000 song files to the service.
In a company blog post, Google director of digital content Jamie Rosenberg said that Google Play will look to offer a combined storage and backup platform which can sync across multiple devices.
"Today we are eliminating all that hassle with Google Play, a digital entertainment destination where you can find, enjoy and share your favourite music, movies, books and apps on the web and on your Android phone or tablet," Rosenberg said.
"Google Play is entirely cloud-based so all your music, movies, books and apps are stored online, always available to you, and you never have to worry about losing them or moving them again."
The release will allow the company to combine its book and music service with a mobile device platform which has served upwards of 12 billion applications.
The launch of the Play service could allow Google to offer a comparable platform to Apple's iCloud service. The iOS storage and backup platform has been available since November of last year.
The release also comes just one day before Apple is set to announce an update to its own mobile hardware line. The company has invited press to a series of international events which are expected to culminate with the unveiling of the next iPad device.
